Treatise on painting <Codex urbinas latinus 1270> by Leonardo( Book )
10 editions published between 1882 and 1970 in 4 languages and held by 557 libraries worldwide
"The genius of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) shines forth in major paintings such as the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper and his many drawings. How Leonardo accomplished these astounding works of art is shown in A Treatise on Painting, published in 1651, essentially a primer for students interested in learning the craft of drawing and painting." "Leonardo begins with careful instructions on drawing the main features of human anatomy, and then moves on to techniques of rendering motion and perspective. He discusses aspects of good composition; inventiveness; the expression of various emotions; creating effects of light, shadow, and color; and many other subtle points of artistic form. Throughout, Leonardo stresses the importance of meticulous study of the subjects to be rendered and the need for assiduous practice." "This edition is complete with anatomical drawings by the French classicist master Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) and geometrical illustrations by the great Italian Renaissance architect Leon Battista Alberti (1404-1472), as well as an informative biography of Leonardo and an appendix that lists the artist's manuscripts, principal paintings, and drawings."--Jacket
King Artus; a Hebrew Arthurian romance of 1279 [MS. Cod. Vat. Hebr. Urbino 48, ff. 75-77] by King Artus( Book )
8 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 296 libraries worldwide
An English translation of one of the most fascinating works in medieval Hebrew letters. A rarity, this refurbished Hebrew translation of an Arthurian romance is the only known text of its kind in existence. Based on the writings of an anonymous Italian Jew in 1279, the author presents two stories. The first relates Merlin's role in the seductions of Igerna by Pendragon and the consequent birth of Arthur. The second tells of Arthur's rise to royal glory, of Lancelot's affair with Guinevere, his meeting with the maid of Askalot and his skill at a jousting tournament. This romance exists in a unique copy at the Vatican Library, which Curt Leviant personally examined. He offers a readable version of that text in corrected Hebrew with English transliteration on facing pages and an analysis of Jewish aspects of the piece. He also traces its origins to an old French tale

Memory and community in medieval southern Italy : the history, chapter book, and necrology of Santa Maria del Gualdo Mazzocca by Charles Hilken( Book )
3 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 168 libraries worldwide
"At the center of this work are an edition and study of the necrology of the monastery of Santa Maria del Gualdo Mazzocca (Vatican City, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Vaticanus latinus 5949, fols. 232r 248v). In active use for three centuries, the necrology is a remarkable mirror of monastic life. The study of the necrology is placed in the contexts of the chapter book that preserves it and the monastery that produced it. Santa Maria del Gualdo Mazzocca was a Benedictine priory, and then abbey, directly dependent upon the papacy. Its history and that of its chapter book are part of the history of the Benedictines and their liturgy in the Beneventan cultural zone in the High Middle Ages." "A history of the abbey and a survey of the chapter book and its contents are followed by a detailed study and edition of the necrology. A complete record of deaths from the foundation of the priory to its decline, it provides a rare glimpse into the customs of remembrance over the 300 years of the monastery's existence. Its value is increased as a history of the inner life of the monastery, especially with regard to the existence of clerical and monastic offices." "The three principal appendices survey the land holdings of Santa Maria del Gualdo Mazzocca, provide a detailed comparison of the Gualdo Mazzocca and Santa Sofia martyrologies, and study the capitular lessons of Gualdo Mazzocca and other closely related collections. The volume concludes with a register of place-names, biographical notes, an index of personal names in the necrology, a map, and general index." "This study of Gualdo Mazzocca and Vat. lat. 5949 is the first in English and the first to provide an edition of the necrology."--BOOK JACKET
