The problem of sovereignty in the later Middle Ages : the papal monarchy with Augustinus Triumphus and the publicists by Michael Wilks( Book )
30 editions published between 1963 and 2008 in English and held by 775 libraries worldwide
"Sovereignty has always been an important concept in political thought, and at no time in European history was it more important than during the perplexed conditions of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Universal government was a fading dream, giving way to the new conception of the national state and the whole basis of political thought was being reoriented by the influx of Aristotelian ideas. Dr. Wilks's book is an attempt to clarify the more important problems in the political outlook of the period. He shows us that at this time the theologians and literary writers, especially Augustinus Triumphus of Ancona, had built up a complete theory of sovereignty in favour of the papal monarchy, based on a neo-Platonic, Augustinian view of the church as a universal and totalitarian state. The rediscovery of Aristotle's works and the revival of Roman law, however, brought forward opposing views: the radicals advanced the idea of a secularized, individualistic society and the notion of following popular sovereignty; the moderates, on the other hand, following the principles of Thomas Aquinas, sought merely to modify the papal theory by subjecting the ruler to natural law and reducing the political character of the church in order to admit the limited competence of the lay state in its own right. Dr. Wilks shows how these Thomistic principles were responsible for the gradual destruction of the Augustinian concept of society and papal sovereignty. He also discusses the political importance of the disputes over universals, the relationship between papacy and the episcopal opposition, the growth of the national sovereign state, and the development of a complete conciliar theory some fifty years before the Great Schism of 1378."--

Prophecy and eschatology by Anglo-Dutch colloquium on Church history( Book )
8 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 359 libraries worldwide
Prophecy has played a vital part in the history of the Church, throughout the Christian centuries, much as it did in the era of the Jewish Old Testament. In addition, the Christian tradition has the added element of an officially authorized but enigmatic prophetic book, the Apocalypse, or Revelation of St John. From the Early Middle Ages onwards preoccupation with this apocalypse became an important feature of western culture as people searched for signs that the end of the world was at hand, with the rule of the Antichrist supposedly preceding the final Day of Judgement when a new spiritual elect would find salvation. This in turn encouraged intellectual and eschatological speculation on the age of the world, of humankind, all of which flourished luxuriantly in the later medieval period. Most notable were the theories of Joachim of Fiore. Similar themes were continued and revived during the Reformation and in the seventeenth century when millenarian ideas drew special support from Protestant sects in Britain and on the Continent. The medieval roots of these ideas also ensured continuity in Roman Catholic theology well into the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, so that Victorian Dissenters showed an equal preoccupation with prophecy, eschatology, death and salvation as had their medieval forbears. This collection of seventeen papers from the fifth Anglo-Dutch Colloquium on Church History (held at Groningen in 1992) takes a fresh look at this theme, drawing together the whole field of apocalyptic and prophetic speculation between the twelfth and nineteenth centuries in Britain and Europe

Papauté, monachisme et théories politiques. études d'histoire médiévale offertes à Marcel Pacaut by Pierre Guichard( file )
1 edition published in 2019 in French and held by 3 libraries worldwide
