Yo-Yo Boing! tackles tough social issues ranging from domestic violence, sexual harassment, discrimination, mental illness, depression, and racism, with sardonic humor. The work switches unexpectedly between literary genres and moods with the vitality of Hysterical Realism, along the lines of Zadie Smith, David Foster Wallace, Jonathan Frazen, Roberto Bolano, Jeffrey Eugenides, and Salman Rushdie. This cross-genre work is touted as a novel, but can also be considered an epic postmodern poem. The book celebrates lighthearted moments in American daily life and features euphoric scenes of revelry, dinner parties, and poetry readings. Dramatic dialogues among anonymous characters compose most of the book, but the work is structured as a medley of poetry, fiction, and political philosophy with excerpts from Broadway musicals, tabloids, news, and world cinema. Yo-Yo Boing!, the Spanglish original, is studied by linguists for its use of Spanglish and by cultural theorists for its optics on contemporary Hispanic American culture. Yo-Yo Boing! was first first published in Spanglish in 1998 by Latin American Literary Review Press with an introduction by Doris Sommer and Alexandra Vega Merino; their introduction which contextualizes Braschi's innovations is missed in later editions such as this.
Yo-Yo Boing! is recommended for courses on Spanglish, Experimental Literature, Hysterical Realism, Postmodernism, Nuyorican Movement, Puerto Rican Studies, and Caribbean Literature.
