Review of 'What You Should Know About Sleep’ (#1743) by J. W. Klapman

CITATION: Klapman, J. W. (n.d.). What You Should Know About Sleep (Little Blue Book No. 1743) Girard, Kansas: Haldeman-Julius Publications.

Reviewer: Dr W. P. Palmer.

This is one of the shorter Little Blue Books, published by Haldeman-Julius Publications containing only 32 pages written by Dr J. W. Klapman. Emanuel Haldeman-Julius edited and published more than 2000 Little Blue Books. There were a number of authors who wrote many Little Blue Books for him called his ‘hack’ writers and who were generously paid for each book written. Klapman was not one of these authors, but he wrote seven Little Blue Books for Haldeman-Julius (listed below).

‘What You Should Know About Sleep’ is one of these probably written in about 1930 when he was quite young and needed money. Klapman did eventually become a psychiatrist who was an expert on Group Psychotherapy writing an important textbook on the topic (see below).
His book about sleep describes the nature of sleep, its hygiene, its disorders and its psychology, followed by sections on somnambulism (sleep-walking), hypnosis, dreaming and nightmares. The section on dreaming quotes and comments upon Freud’s views.

Overall the book is not well written as a way of making sleeping problems known to the general public as Klapman tends to use unfamiliar long words rather than to explain the issues simply. He is not assisted by the errors in the low cost printing as the book was originally sold for just five cents. Unfortunately, the book cannot be recommended.
