This is a fun Broadway musical about the making of this musical which shouldn't have ended up on Broadway, because it is just a cast of four with a set that include four chairs, but it did make it to Broadway! The book is by Hunter Bell and the music and lyrics are by Jeff Bowen, who both play themselves in the show along with their friends Susan Blackwell and Heidi Blickenstaff, and their keyboard player Larry Pressgrove. There are lots of inside jokes about musicals and riffs from other shows. The song "Monkeys and Playbills" didn't make any sense to me until I saw the show...during the song they show images of Playbills and include the names of the shows on them in the song. It is hilarious to watch.
I was lucky to see [title of show] the last weekend it was on Broadway, which added to the fun of the show, because the audience had many huge fans of the show there cheering the cast along. It is a true theatre piece that works well on the stage without huge set and big name stars. The answering machine bits with lots of Broadway actors that add to the inside jokes and musical theatre humour.
I'd see it again in a minute, but it isn't the sort of show to tour or be a blockbuster, but is great fun with lots of comedy and great songs. "This show has everything! Half naked guys and girl-on-girl action!"
Some of my favorite songs include: "Untitled opening number", "Die vampire die" and "Nine people's favorite thing."
