Correspondence, subject files, recommendations and testimonials, financial and legal records, proposals, grant materials, manuscript drafts of articles, speeches, and talks; social correspondence, and ephemera; also, photographs, audiorecordings, and transcripts.
The collection reflects Coles' work in matters of race relations, civil rights, racial integration, and African-American civic, political, religious, and social life; other subjects include the socioeconomic progress of Rochester's African American community, education, politics and government, local history, housing, and employment.
The research collection also includes newspapers, monographs, reports, subject files, booklets, clipping files, dissertations, and a wide range of other materials collected with reference to and in support of Coles' publishing and writing.
