I couldn't put this book down! It provides a great overview of the four major crusades and then some. The author argues that the crusaders were responding to Muslim expansion into Spain, Byzantium, and North Africa (aka Christian Kingdoms). This is contrary to the popular belief that the crusades began because medieval christian popes, knights, and kings were blood thirsty, greedy, colonialist looking for converts. If you want a great introduction to the crusading era, then I hightly recommend this book. Great job Mr. Stark.
