Description: John Henry is a hero of American folklore. His tale depicts him as a strongman who races a steam powered hammer in the hope of saving the jobs of his men on the railroad. Henry won the race but died from exhaustion with his hammer in his hand. Henry has been the subject of numerous writings on American folklore, as well as songs, stories, and theatrical works.
